To prevent breakage at harvest, allow to wilt slightly in field after cutting, pack in boxes, then hydrocool or liquid-ice to restore.
CULTURE: Sow from early spring through midsummer. In the South, pac choi is well adapted for fall plantings. Suitable for fall sowing in mild climates or in a high tunnel or other protected structure in colder climates. Premature bolting of seedlings may occur if temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C), especially over multiple nights. Cold temperatures generally do not cause bolting of plants past the seedling stage.
DAYS TO MATURITY: From emergence after direct seeding.
DIRECT SEEDING: Sow 15 seeds/ft., 1/4" deep in rows 12-18" apart. Thin plants as recommended in our Pac Choi Comparison Chart. For baby-leaf production of 'Rosie', the only pac choi we recommend for baby leaf, see the Baby-Leaf Brassica Greens culture.
TRANSPLANTING: Start seeds in 128 or 72-cell trays, 2–4 weeks before transplanting. Plant out before plants become rootbound or stressed to prevent premature bolting.
INSECT PESTS:
Flea beetles can be controlled by covering with floating row covers from day of sowing.
HARVEST: Harvest before flowering.
AVG. SEEDING RATE: For bunching: 830'/oz., 13,000'/lb. at above spacing.
SEED SPECS: SEEDS/OZ.: Avg. 10,300.
PACKET: 250 seeds. Full size: sows 16'; Baby leaf: sows 4'.

Days To Maturity

Average number of days from seeding date to harvest, within a specific crop group. If a transplanted crop: average number of days from transplant date. Not sure if crop is direct-seeded or transplanted? Check the Growing Information box for details. If crop can be both direct-seeded or transplanted, days to maturity refers to direct seeding. Days to maturity for all flowers and herbs is calculated from seeding date.

50 Days

Life Cycle

Plants can be Annuals (single growing season), Perennials (grow year after year), Tender Perennials (grow year after year in warmer climates; and in some cases when given special protection in colder climates), or Biennials (require two years to mature).
