Shade Cloth
Use shade cloth to spare your crops the ill effects of heat, humidity, and excess sunlight while improving crop quality, crop yield, hastening growth, and more. Our shade cloth is made of knitted 100% UV stabilized black polyethylene. The knitted fabric has better ventilation and water permeability than woven shade cloth, and can be cut without unraveling. It has a lifetime of 5-7 years, more if stored out of the sun during periods of non-use. Hang high enough above your plants to ensure adequate ventilation, and shade cloth can result in a drop in ambient temperature around your plants of 10°F or more. We offer 10' width (compatible with Quick Hoops low tunnels) and 20' width (ideal for high tunnels). The density of the knit indicates the percentage of light blocked by the cloth; 30% cloth allows 70% light transmission, etc. For solanaceous crops such as tomatoes and peppers, use 30% shade cloth in areas with very hot summers; for cold-loving lettuce, spinach and cole crops, use 50% in hot, southern areas, 30% in northern zones. For shade-loving plants, use 50%.
