Like most brassicas, turnips are a cool-weather crop. They can be planted in late summer or early fall, depending on latitude, to serve as a major component of wildlife food plots. Deer are especially fond of them, as are sheep and cattle. Grazing can take place in the fall and into the early winter on the leafy tops and on the roots later in the winter, filling a nutrition gap even with snow cover. They can also be harvested and stored like mangels for winter animal feedings.
