California is currently the region of focus for a new Territory Sales Representative interested in becoming a member of our team.

John Bauer
Territory Sales Representative • Central and Southern California
John Bauer
John Bauer
“ In 1973, I was one of Johnny's first customers, meeting with Rob Johnston in his basement seed store in Acton, Massachusetts. Rob discussed my primeval organic crop plan with me and made some great variety and cultural recommendations. From those beginnings I farmed for over 30 years, and Johnny's has thrived for nearly 50. ”

John joined Johnny's Sales team in 2009, bringing his extensive history in agriculture to the position. John's past endeavors include opening an organic market garden in New Hampshire 40 years ago; farming over 200 acres of conventionally and organically grown crops in Massachusetts; serving as a former Director of Research and Production; and as GM for a large, organic vegetable and herb farm in California.

John's passion has always been discovering and trialing innovative new varieties, production methods, and equipment designs. In California he has broadened our knowledge base in the value of beneficial flowering insectary crops and hedgerows, exploring creative ways to manage insects and control disease within organic systems. He has also lent insight into leading-edge varieties bred and developed for the California vegetable and herb farming industry. John recognizes the tremendous challenges and opportunities facing California growers, and works energetically to service growers and businesses within this dynamic region.

“ My goal as your sales representative is to work alongside you and make your work a little easier. I will apply my regional expertise and provide crop recommendations to support your decision-making. I want your farm to be productive and successful. Let me know what your challenges are, and I'll do everything I can to help. ”

Kim began working for Johnny's in 2019 in the Customer Care Department, joined the Commercial Sales Team in 2020 as a Sales Support Specialist, and has quickly advanced to the role of Territory Sales Representative for the Central U.S.

Originally from Oklahoma, Kim spent 20 years in Dallas, Texas before moving to Maine with her husband in 2013, seeking a change of pace, less concrete, and more woods.

Kim gained experience in the agriculture industry by working for two Maine-based certified-organic farms and an apple orchard. That experience allowed her to see firsthand the challenges growers face. She has also studied Sustainable Food and Farming at UMass. Prior to working in agriculture, Kim acquired an extensive background in customer service and sales support, which enables her to provide excellent service to the growers she serves.

Becky Hume

Becky Hume
Becky Hume
“ As a farmer myself, I understand the goals and frustrations of commercial agriculture. Your success is my priority! I want to be a partner you can rely on for the information, seed, and supplies you need to continue growing your farm, greenhouse, or market garden business. ”

Becky Hume is a commercial vegetable grower who, long before joining Johnny's Commercial Sales team in 2021, had become a Johnny's customer.

Becky knew farming was her life's work after completing her first farm apprenticeship at the age of 16. She went on to earn a degree in agriculture from Cornell University and has spent the last 12 years working in various sectors of the agricultural industry. She worked on several cut flower and vegetable farms in the U.S. and abroad before moving to Texas in 2014. Since then, she has managed a 200-acre organic vegetable farm, an aquaponic facility, and a regional microgreens operation. She currently owns and operates her own diversified vegetable farm just outside of Austin, Texas.

As a Southwestern grower, Becky has first-hand experience with the unique climatic and regional needs of her customers and is passionate about helping growers find the varieties that perform best in Texas and the Southwest.

When she is not helping farmers find the perfect varieties to thrive on their farms, Becky can usually be found tending the fields on her own farm, cooking lavish meals for friends, or out at the local honky-tonk, two-stepping.

Ken Fine
Ken Fine
“ It is an exciting time to be a professional vegetable grower. There is an expanding community of new and seasoned growers to learn from — and with whom to celebrate the renewed interest in locally grown fresh produce. ”

Ken has worked with commercial growers at Johnny's Selected Seeds since 1999. He has observed the evolution of small organic farms, from struggling on the fringe to an era of locally grown, organic produce being appreciated in the mainstream. He likes to stay current with successful market farming techniques, trends in consumer interest, and the best varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers available.

Ken's background in farming dates back to 1981, with an apprenticeship at the UC Santa Cruz Farm Project. In 1985 he founded a mixed vegetable market farm in Liberty, Maine, growing specialty lettuces, greens, and a full line of quality produce of all types. The harvest was sold directly to stores and restaurants in regional Mid Coast Maine and shipped to restaurants as far afield as Portland and Boston.

Territory Sales Representative • Mid Atlantic Seaboard, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee
Lauren Kendall
Lauren Kendall
“ Season after season, I continue to be in awe of the seeds I sow; their processes of coming to fruition never cease to amaze me! The deep respect and honor I have for the seeds I also have for all the different types of growers who work with them. It is a true pleasure to support this relationship between growers and the seeds. ”

Lauren has joined the team at Johnny's as the Mid-Atlantic, Tennessee, and Kentucky Sales Representative.

Lauren grew up gardening with her father in their home garden in Coshocton, Ohio. She attended Denison University and double-majored in International Relations and German. After graduation, Lauren served in the Peace Corps in Mitsinjo, Madagascar, where she first began to understand the importance of women, farming, health, and the power of seeds.

She determined then she would pursue this passion and curiosity, and has been farming ever since. After WWOOFing in Argentina and California she landed her first job as a farm assistant at Heirloom Harvest in Massachusetts. She then went West to pursue a Montessori model of goat farming and vegetable production for middle school students in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she met, married, and began farming in tandem with her chef husband.

The couple then moved to SingleThread Farms in Healdsburg, California, where he worked in the kitchen and she managed the farm. They next spent time in Big Sur, California in a similar farmer-chef relationship, and moved to Tennessee in the middle of 2020, where Lauren managed a 20-acre organic CSA farm outside of Nashville.

Lauren is also a trained Hoshindo apitherapist as well as a certified Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist. Her healing arts practice has developed in partnership with her growing practice.

Brandon Haines
Brandon Haines
“ I know firsthand how hard farmers work to provide the highest quality crops for their customers. I am here to work with you to achieve your farming goals. ”

A native of Pennsylvania, Brandon followed his love of nature to Sierra Nevada College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in environmental science and ecology. While in school he worked for the University of California, Davis, at their Lake Tahoe Environmental Research Center, studying invasive species and water quality. After graduation he spent time in AmeriCorps, building and maintaining trails throughout Nevada. In 2012 he returned to his native Pennsylvania to apprentice on a diversified organic vegetable farm. Supplementing his on-farm education there with classes at Penn State Extension, he was then hired as vegetable production manager at another diversified farm. In 2016 he bought his own farm in the Lehigh Valley, owning and operating it for three years before taking on management of another local organic vegetable farm.

Most recently Brandon has joined Johnny's as the Territory Sales Representative in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. His education and hands-on experience have prepared him well to help farmers find the tools and varieties that work best for their unique growing situations.

Amy Dolley
“ Working in my garden and growing my own food is one of my greatest pleasures in life. I am proud to be involved in the business of agriculture, and look forward to learning from and with the growers in my territory and assisting with their needs in any way that I can. ”

Amy brings to the team a wealth of experience and working familiarity with Johnny's varieties from having fulfilled a series of roles within our Contact Center and the Albion Research & Trialing Farm. While at Johnny's Research Farm, she acquired hands-on experience spanning our entire seed-production process — from starting crops in the greenhouse, transplanting, and cultivating to harvesting, sluicing, and cleaning seeds. This past experience has given her insight into and appreciation for crops not only for the edible harvest they provide, but also for their seed potential.

Amy possesses deep working knowledge accrued by running her own homestead farm, as well. With the goal of meeting her family's needs to every extent possible, she engages in year-round production of vegetables, fruit, and free-range livestock. She looks forward to connecting with commercial growers throughout her territory.

Emma Golonka
Territory Sales Representative • Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut
Emma Golonka
Emma Golonka
“ New England farmers are a resilient, intelligent, and resourceful group of people, and I am immensely grateful to be able to work with and learn from them. I’m here to help farmers find the best products to suit their individual needs, and I believe that this work will inherently strengthen food systems in this region and serve to maintain agricultural traditions. ”

Emma grew up farming in Western Massachusetts and graduated from UMass Amherst with a degree in Plant, Soil, and Insect Sciences, with a concentration in sustainable horticulture. She most recently managed her family's diversified produce farm.

As a farmer and member of the agricultural community, Emma understands the small details involved in selecting the right varieties, and how individualized that process and its outcome can be to different growers. She enjoys trialing new selections and assessing their use in varied settings.

Emma adds, "Through my work on my own family's farm I have learned the most from running our own trials, selecting the best varieties for our particular needs, and discovering what will taste best and serve our customers best. I've enjoyed this not only because it is fun and the variation in cultivars is endlessly fascinating, but also because the pursuit of excellence reflects a commitment to doing our best by the community we feed, employ, and thereby strengthen. My goal is now to apply that mindset to my territory; whereas my farm and my valley were my prior focus, all the farmers and growers of Western New England are now my people. I feel a strong sense of responsibility for the advice I give and the success of individuals and food systems here. I can't quite believe my luck in joining Johnny's to share in the common pursuit of service and excellence."

“ Food provides a way for people to show they care about each other, to tell stories, and to find identity and connection. Food can serve as a creator of livelihoods, community engagement and cohesion, and citizen empowerment. ”

She obtained degrees in Agricultural Technology and Environmental Horticulture from Virginia Tech, and practiced sustainable agriculture at Virginia Tech's organic farm, which supplies fresh produce directly to the university's dining services. Eileen Hagerman

Eileen joined the Commercial Sales Team in 2020. She is on the International Sales Support Team, currently acting as Sales Support Specialist for Canada and working closely with Canadian Commercial Sales Representative, Thomas Macy.

In 2018, she began working seasonally in the fulfilment center while working on her doctoral thesis. There she found inspiration in the company's rich history and impact on the low-input and organic farming movement, as well as in the communitarian ethos inherent in working for an employee-owned company, and wanted to explore a more tangible connection to her growing interest in agriculture.

Eileen brings to the team a background in agricultural history, human ecology, and teaching. She also brings horticultural and landscape-design experience, having completed a permaculture design course and helped found a community garden project at the University of Maine. Areas of interest include eco-inclusive and native plant agriculture, habitat restoration, beneficial insects, and phenology. In addition to her duties as a Sales Support Specialist, she serves on the company's Social Action Committee, working with her fellow employee-owners to explore new ways for Johnny's to build upon its existing commitments to social responsibility.
